Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to develope a screening tool for presbycusis.
Method: The Korean hearing handicap inventory for the elderly (KHHIE) and audiometric tests were performed for 444 elderly subjects with normal hearing or sensorineural hearing losses aged 65-91 years. The PTA of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz was 47.41 dBHL at the better ear and the diagnostic criterion was 25 dBHL.
Results: A screening tool, hearing handicap index for screening presbycusis (HHISP) was developed based on the sensitivity and specificity of each item in the KHHIE. The pearson product-moment correlations between the HHISP scores and the PTAs was 0.72. The highest sum of the HHISP was obtained at the screening criterion of 4 points. The test efficiency of the HHISP was similar to that of the KHHIE.
Conclusion: The results suggest that the HHISP be as useful as the longer versions, the KHHIE or the KHHIE-10, for screening presbycusis.
